Lembang – In a commendable initiative to foster leadership, empathy, and a love for education, students of DHIS Secondary Lembang recently took part in the “Secondary Mengajar” program — a special activity where secondary students step into the role of teachers at local elementary schools.
The program is designed to train students’ social and leadership skills by giving them real-life teaching experiences. Through this hands-on involvement, students learn to communicate effectively, manage a classroom, and understand the challenges and joys of being an educator.
More than just an academic exercise, “Secondary Mengajar” emphasizes character development. By interacting with younger students, secondary participants are encouraged to build empathy and sympathy, understanding the needs, emotions, and learning styles of the children they teach. This experience nurtures a sense of responsibility and maturity as they take on the role of role models and mentors.
“Our goal is to prepare students not just academically, but socially and emotionally,” said one of the program coordinators. “By teaching others, they gain a deeper appreciation for the value of education and the effort that goes into it.”
Throughout the day, secondary students led engaging lessons, storytelling sessions, educational games, and group activities. The younger students responded enthusiastically, and the energy in the classroom reflected a mutual sense of excitement and respect.
One secondary student shared, “At first I was nervous, but after a few minutes, I realized how fun and meaningful it is to teach. I now understand how much teachers care and work for their students.”
“Secondary Mengajar” is more than a school activity — it’s a transformative experience that allows students to grow as compassionate, confident, and socially aware individuals, all while inspiring the next generation to love learning.
This initiative stands as a powerful example of how education can be a two-way street — one where both the teacher and the student grow together.
